Overview
A Deeper Look
Thailand means "land of the free" and throughout its 800-year history, Thailand can boast the distinction of being the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized. Yet, very few in this predominately Buddhist nation have experienced true freedom in Christ. Individuals and families (age 13 and up) gain exposure to urban ministry in Bangkok, a city of 8 million people where less than 1% know Christ. This past year, we sent a team to help our partner organizations free women in forced prostitution and provide them with alternatives, counseling, and after-care. They and the senior high team were able to also journey to the Tsunami region to help victims find hope.
Tsunami Relief
In the days following Dec. 26, 2004, Perimeter members gave a generous $84,238 to the Indian Ocean Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund. A ministry team of staff and lay members determined to split the amount equally between our indigenous partners in India and Thailand. Although Perimeter provided some early disaster relief supplies, we worked with our partners to primarily focus on long-term needs of residents in specific communities.
Our Thai partners in Bangkok established a Coordination & Information Center near Khao Lak, one of the hardest hit beaches of Thailand. This center helped to catalogue and coordinate all of the Christian Relief efforts that flooded the region. In addition, our partners directly served the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those whose family members had been swept away. The people are very responsive to the Gospel, brought to them along with post-trauma counseling and microfinance assistance. In the process, a church was planted; just 3 months into it, there were already 30 new believers!
