Overview Tanzania

Tanzania

Quietly, in the shadow of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Spirit is sweeping through the Sub-Saharan country of Tanzania and uniting pastors - and Perimeter has had the privilege of watching that movement, especially in the village of Karanse. There is a place for Perimeter members in women's and youth ministry, equipping of pastors, micro-enterprise development, and widow and orphan care. Perimeter has been serving in Tanzania since 1999 through ministries of "Word" and "Deed," seeking to show mercy and compassion and administer true justice through the indigenous church. Here are just a few ways we have been addressing the needs in the past few years:

  • Training Tanzanian pastors, women and youth leaders
  • Helping the church in the village of Karanse to minister to nearly 100 widows and 400 impoverished children and orphans
  • Providing emergency relief in the form of maize and beans
  • Enabling the church to build or repair homes for the widows
  • Working to serve and strengthen the local Christian school that Perimeter helped establish
  • Sponsoring Health Clinics and training on HIV/AIDS prevention

Journey Experience

"In June, I had the opportunity to visit Eva, a widow who is dying of AIDS. She was barely 80 pounds. Eva was infected with AIDS by her husband, who left her to die. Not only was she infected, but also their 10-year-old daughter, Winnie, through sexual abuse, and her two-year-old child, whom Eva had to send to an orphanage. Mike, her 12-year-old, who is not infected, is the one "in charge" of caring for the family. I walked into thier hovel of a home and was almost stopped in my tracks by the stench. After greeting and giving a gift of food, I had the opportunity to sit and talk with Eva. She briefly shared her story and then we read scripture and prayed over her. I could barely get the words out to pray, but God in His mercy helped me keep it together until we left. I gently rubbed her back while we prayed and she just leaned into me, like a little child longing to be held and comforted by their parent. How long was it since she had been touched by genuine love and affection? She is left with just one hope - Jesus. I thank God for our partner's ministry to teach people about AIDS prevention and to care for victims of this disease. I praise Jesus that He gives hope to the hopeless, is a Father to the fatherless, and Provider for those in need."-
