Under 6 Program
Project C.H.I.L.D. - Under 6 Program
The Under 6 Program provides care and nurturing of children before the entrance into the pre-one class at the school. The pre-one class is roughly equivalent to kindergarten. There is a pre-school program that is open to all the children. This allows the children the opportunity to begin learning, something that we often take for granted in the west. Learning things like counting, ABCs, colors, etc. do not normally occur in the home. With the tremendous amount of work to be done in order to support the family, the mother (if there is one) is not usually able to devote much time to the care and development of the children. As so many studies suggest, the early years are critical in the development of a child. Furthermore, we know that it is important for young children to play. They learn through play. Playing develops motor skills, critical thinking skills, and is just fun and good for their emotional development.
With that in mind, a program was developed for children under the age of six. They begin the process of learning, sing lots of songs, have the opportunity to play, and receive vitamin enriched porridge in order to grow strong. A social worker and two teachers love and care for these children on a daily basis. The impact is clearly evident when you visit Karanse and see these children playing on swings, singing songs about God, or crowded around a teacher listening to a story. This program is one of the most significant differences compared to most child sponsorship programs. In fact, the Tanzanian government has taken notice and high ranking officials from the capital came and visited this program and are piloting similar programs across the country.
As we all know the home life of the child is crucial. In order to care for the child, you need to care for the family. Every month the child's family receive maize to help supplement their food. The mothers learn about proper nutrition, hygiene, and most importantly about Christ. The ministry truly is holistic.
